Williamston was first settled in 1834 by Hiram and Joseph Putnam under the name Cedar, but they sold out within a year to the Williams brothers, who built a sawmill in 1840 and a grist mill in 1842 before the town was platted in 1845. Growth accelerated once the Howell and Lansing Railroad opened in 1871, the same year Williamston incorporated as a village, prompting construction like the Andrews Hotel and Town Hall.
