From an 1841 Plat Called Hamilton to Okemos
Okemos traces to 1839, when Sanford Marsh and Freeman Bray settled the site; Bray platted the village in 1841 under the name Hamilton, though residents already called it Okemos after Ojibwe leader Chief John Okemos, and the Michigan legislature made that name official in 1859. By 1874 the Detroit–Grand River plank road, today's Hamilton Road, ran past hotels, stores, and mills, anchoring a farming community that later became one of greater Lansing's suburbs.
