An 1838 County Seat Preserved by Its Own Slowdown
Mason was founded in 1838 when Charles Noble, a Monroe County register of deeds, bought 560 acres in Vevay Township and sent Lewis Lacey to build a sawmill and plat the first section; Mason became the Ingham County seat in 1840. The town boomed to roughly 2,200 residents by 1887, but growth slowed in the early 1900s, which left much of that boom-era housing standing largely undisturbed near today's Courthouse Square Historic District.
