An 1837 Farm Settlement That Took Until 1860 to Get Its Name
The land that became Holt was first purchased in 1837 -- Frederick Luther on May 4 and John Norris on May 22 -- as part of a purely agricultural settlement with no single founding industry. The community was first called Delhi Center; postal mix-ups with Delhi Mills in Washtenaw County forced a change, and the post office was renamed Holt on February 10, 1860.
Interurban-Era Growth, Then a Long Wait for Township Status
The Michigan United Railways interurban line connected Holt to Lansing in the early 1900s and brought in a first wave of steady residential growth, but Delhi Charter Township itself wasn't formally established until September 18, 1961, after years of study over whether to incorporate as a city, merge with Lansing, or become a charter township. That gap between the interurban-era growth and the 1961 township vote is visible in Holt's window stock, which spans early-1900s frame construction next to later mid-century subdivisions.
