A Lakeside Resort Town Before It Was a Suburb
Haslett began as a summer resort: in 1887, Port Huron businessman James H. Haslett bought property on the southwest corner of what was then called Pine Lake and built it into a Spiritualist camp that drew 2,000 to 4,000 weekend visitors each summer. The village was renamed Haslett Park around 1890 in his honor, shortened to just Haslett by 1895, and the lake itself wasn't renamed Lake Lansing until 1927.
Seasonal Cottages Turned Into Year-Round Homes
A lot of Haslett's oldest structures started as seasonal resort cottages built for that 1880s-1890s visitor boom rather than as year-round housing, and many were converted or replaced as the area shifted from a summer destination to a permanent Meridian Township neighborhood. Window openings on those converted cottages often don't match modern standard sizes, so confirming a home's origin as resort-era or later construction matters before ordering replacements.
