A Former County Seat That Lost Its Courthouse in 1857
DeWitt was settled in 1833 by Captain David Scott, who relocated from Ann Arbor and platted the land; the state legislature formally created DeWitt Township on March 23, 1836. DeWitt Township served as the Clinton County seat from the county's 1831 creation until December 1857, when the seat moved to St. Johns, leaving DeWitt to develop as a residential community rather than a government center.
Rebuilding After a 1930 Fire Shaped the Building Stock
DeWitt didn't incorporate as a village until 1929, and the following year a fire destroyed eight buildings in town -- meaning a meaningful share of DeWitt's older core was rebuilt in the early 1930s rather than dating to the original 1830s settlement.
